Description of Saint-Emilion:

The Right Bank commune of Saint-Èmilion lies north of the Dordogne River, adjacent to Pomerol. Long considered one of the loveliest villages in Bordeaux, the idyllic medieval town’s beauty contrasts sharply with the plainer, functional villages of the Médoc.

Saint-Èmilion was omitted from the 1855 Classification, perhaps due to its distance from the city of Bordeaux. Historically, the commune’s wines were unknown outside the locality and wine brokers rarely ventured to the area. In 1954, Saint-Èmilion created its own classification, which is separate from the 1855 in that it is revised every decade or so (thusfar in 1969, 1984 and 1995). The commune’s châteaux have been promoted and demoted during these reclassifications.

For those who find red wines too harsh or bitter, Saint-Èmilion, with its elegance and finesse, is one of the easiest with which to make the transition from white to red. The commune’s wines are often soft, silky and seductive.
